The expansion of the agricultural frontier, coupled with intensification, has negative effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services other than food production itself. The restoration of agroecosystems is proposed as a solution for producing food whilst maintaining ecosystem services (such as pollination, erosion control and water quality) and biodiversity within agricultural landscapes.
The Campos de Vida project is in line with national and international policies and instruments designed to promote sustainable agricultural practices. It involves introducing elements that do not compete for land use and have a disproportionately high positive impact on biodiversity and its functions, such as ponds, nesting sites and wildlife shelters, bird perches, hedgerows or forest islands, amongst others.
Agroecological restoration initiatives are carried out through Land Stewardship schemes, a horizontal conservation tool whereby the landowner and the stewardship organisation (in this case, FIRE) agree on the measures to be implemented on the property. The products obtained (wine, olive oil, pulses) carry the registered trademark “Campos de Vida” (No. 3,027,209), whose slogan is “We produce food and biodiversity”.
