Climate change is a reality that affects millions of people worldwide and is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss. Cities are currently the areas with the highest number and density of people, which is why their adaptation to this new climate situation is a priority.
In collaboration with Valdepeñas Town Council, FIRE is developing an urban renaturalisation plan whose main objective is to transform the town into a functional ecosystem, rich in plant and animal biodiversity, and to help the town become climate-smart. The ultimate aim is to counteract, as far as possible, some of the consequences of the climate emergency through nature-based solutions. These effects, such as rising temperatures, can be mitigated to some extent by creating green infrastructure that prevents heat island effects and the heating of road surfaces, whilst also restoring lost ecological connectivity.
